A recent member of the MarriageMore Facebook community asked about church backgrounds. We thought it would be helpful so share our story.
Before we dive into today’s topic, let’s talk Halloween. We love dressing up in costumes that really man something to us – something that has a back story for why we are them… for example, since Jeff loves In-N-Out Burger, one year Jeff was an In-N-Out Burger worker and Mandy was the Hamburger. So silly maybe, but this year we are going as Chip and Jojo from Fixer Upper. Why you might ask? Mandy has a major girl crush on JoJo and there’s no hiding that, so why not just be her for one day?!#Shiplap anybody?
What’s your best couple costume you guys have crated and worn??
Now, on to something a little more serious… in our new Facebook Community we had someone ask about our faith backgrounds and more specifically, how did we find a church. While we have our personal beliefs and faith, we certainly don’t judge or think differently about anyone based on what they believe.
With that disclaimer said, in this episode we are sharing all the details about how we were raised in or out of the church and what our journey to becoming a Christian looked like.
Today, we’ve been able to find a non-denominational church that has helped us to see that it’s not really about anything religious, but more about just living your life for Jesus.
But for so many couples, we know how hard it can be to leave the church your spouse grew up at or whose family goes to to find a place that is better for the both of you. For us, we realized we needed to find a place that both of us felt comfortable and like we could gain something from.
There’s no perfect answer for “How do you find a church?“… it’s been a process for us. It’s been something that has stretched and shaped our marriage. We’ve made every excuse in the world for why not too look for a church and even more, why not to get involved in the church.
Looking back, there’s two main things that we would suggest looking for in your church hunt that today we realize were the things that made our church a good fit for us:
They teach from the Bible every week during the service. It seems so simple and almost like a “uhhhh duhhhh”… but many churched don’t teach from the actual Bible.
There’s real community – whether it be small groups or whatever creative ways a church is having individuals grow in a relationship with others, there’s got to be a group of people you can connect with to come along side you when life is both good and hard.
